Because Of Camp...Crystal's Story

“Camp taught me to be comfortable with who I am as an individual, giving me the confidence to step up and become a leader.”

Camp is a big part of my life and is very close to my heart.  When I first came to camp as an 11 year old resident camper, I was nervous, self-conscious, and worried that I wouldn’t be able to make any friends.  I was the kid who had such stage fright that I would run away crying any time I had to present anything in school.  In fact, my first campfire ended in much the same way when my group got up for our skit.  I’ll never forget the counselor that I had that week at camp and how she encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone, try new things, and just be me.  Years later, when I was a counselor at camp, I was able to make a difference in the lives of my campers as my counselors had once done for me.

Camp taught me to be comfortable with who I am as an individual, giving me the confidence to step up and become a leader.  This past summer was my seventh year on staff and my second as the camp Nature Director.  This position of leadership is one that I never would have imagined for myself, but that is what camp does for people.  Camp shows people their potential and encourages them to believe in themselves.  My first year taking on the Nature position was scary at first, because I wasn’t sure what to expect, but knowing that I had people at camp who believed in me made all the difference.  Now I have been able to make the program my own and the skills that I am building for myself through Nature have not only allowed me to connect with the children at camp, but also have furthered me in my goal to become an elementary school teacher and reach children outside of camp as well.

  • So incredibly proud of you, Crystal! You were one of my very first resident campers, and it was an incredible gift to watch you grow. I know that you will be an amazing teacher someday.
