Meet the Staff 2015 - Jenn
Meet the Staff 2015!
Camp Talooli has one of the greatest summer staffs around. With nearly 80% of our staff returning each year, our staff members are incredibly skilled, innovative, and enthusiastic about sharing their love of summer camp with Talooli campers. This is a way for us to share just how special each of our counselors, program staff, and leaders are.
Jenn Van Wormer
Position at Camp this summer:
How many years have you been coming to Camp Talooli?
13 years! Jenn was a Talooli camper and CIT before she started working as a camp counselor. This will be her first summer working as a CIT Instructor.
What is the funniest thing a camper has ever said to you?
A young male camper said to me, "Aren't you like 13? You can't be that tired!" I was actually 19 and had just finished a few rounds of "Catch the Counselor," which is one of the kids' favorite versions of tag - they love chasing us! It was far from the first time I'd been mistaken for being younger, but I thought during my fourth year on staff I might have passed for older than a CIT 1... Needless to say, I just about fell to the ground laughing.
What is your favorite theme week?
Camelot week! I love the stories about King Arthur and Merlin. Seeing it brought to life at camp was totally awesome, and extra magical.
What type of career are you currently pursuing?
I'm planning on becoming a college ceramics professor as well as producing my own artwork. My long-term goal is to run my own nature themed pottery studio that is open to the public.
What are you most looking forward to about this summer?
I'm so excited to be taking on a new role working with CITs! Over the years camp has helped me grow so much as a leader and I am looking forward to being able to pass on my experience to the future generation of Talooli staff.
What is your favorite camp song?
"Flicker" is my favorite camp song. It's a slower, pretty song that we often sing on Thursday nights before everyone goes home. Its a beautiful reminder of the great reasons we love coming to camp year after year.
What is your favorite part about being on staff at Camp Talooli?
It's hard to pick a favorite part of being a Talooli staff member. I have made incredible, lifelong friendships and memories that I will cherish forever. I've also made great connections with campers, learning as much from them as they have from me. I have been blown away by how compassionate and understanding kids can be, despite some of the more difficult moments. But above all, I found myself. Camp is the place where I found my voice, embraced my strengths and weaknesses, and grew into a passionate young adult. Camp taught me to love myself, which I didn't always feel able to do. I owe a lot of who I am to the place where I've spent the past 12 summers.
