2018 Caribbean Island Expedition
US Virgin Islands National Park on St. John
Informational Meeting at Camp Talooli on Sunday, June 4 from 7-8pm
When: February 17-27, 2018
We will travel all day to get to one of the most tropical and exotic parts of the world...and we will still be in America! The US Virgin Islands National Park preserves the tropical beauty of over half of the island of St. John. The park is covered by neo-tropical dry forest and desert ecosystems and the island is surrounded by some of the most beautiful and secluded beaches and coral reefs in the world. Virgin Islands Environmental Resources Station (VIERS) will be our basecamp. The University of the Virgin Islands operates this research station on a beautiful and remote beach.
The Virgin Islands Environmental Resource Station (VIERS) provides camp-style cottages, home-cooked meals in the dining hall, hot showers, clean beds, evening campfires and a 5-minute walk to a remote National Park beach. Check out VIERS at: www.islands.org/VIERS/
Who can join the expedition?
We are forming a group of 24 students and parents from around CNY. Most of the students will be 14-18 and students under 14 are welcome if accompanied by a parent. On previous trips, most of the participants have been high school students but about one third have been parents, grandparents and younger children. Everyone on this trip will function as part of a team. We will travel, eat and explore together under the leadership of Mr. and Mrs. Peneston. We will complete a half-day service project for the national park.
Once we have formed our 2018 team, we will begin to invite the members to a series of meetings where we will get to know each other. Starting in September we will meet about every 6 weeks to review the trip handbook, learn about the island and to answer every possible question.
Cost: approximately $2350
Cost includes airfare, meals, tours, and room.
