A player buys in for a set amount of chips (representing money) and is then dealt cards. Each player may either call the bet, raise it, or fold.

Before the deal, the cards are shuffled and one player designated by the rules of the particular poker variant is given the privilege or obligation to cut. The dealer then deals the cards to each player in turn, beginning with the player to his or her left. These cards can be dealt face up or face down, depending on the variant of poker.

In addition to knowing the basic rules of poker, you should understand hand rankings and position. It is also important to learn how to read your opponents and be able to detect tells. This can be difficult for beginners, but if you pay attention to the way your opponent is moving their hands and betting, you can often determine whether they are holding a strong or weak hand.

When bluffing, try to make it look natural. If you bet a lot and then suddenly call, this will look suspicious to your opponent.
