Betting Structures in Poker
Several betting structures are used in Poker. The three most common are fixed limit, pot-limit and no-limit.
A hand consists of five cards that are dealt to each player. The player with the best hand wins the pot. If two or more players have a hand, the highest card breaks the tie.
A straight is the best natural hand. It is made up of five cards of the same suit. It starts with the highest value card. It can be a high card or a low one. A straight flush is made of five cards of the same suit.
A full house is a hand with two Aces and a King. This is called a sandbagging hand. The best straight is an eight-nine. A straight flush ace cannot wrap around K-A-2-3-4.
A pair of kings is not bad off the deal. It is a solid hand, but not the best. A four of a kind is also a solid hand.
When players are all-in, they only get the pot if they have contributed to the pot. If they do not, they lose. They are not allowed to force other players to play more.
Aces-high straight is a Royal Flush. This is made by hitting the needed cards on the turn and river. The opponent can add no more hero folds to the hand.
Three-card brag was a popular gentleman’s game during the American Revolution. Today, it is still played in the U.K.
