How to Play Poker
Poker is a card game played by two or more players. Each player places an initial amount of money into the pot before the cards are dealt (these are called blind bets). Then, action begins to the left of the dealer and continues clockwise. During this time, players may fold (exit the hand), check (check with no bet), bet (put money into the pot), or raise (bet higher than a previous player’s bet).
The value of a poker hand is determined by the rank and type of cards in it. The highest rank is a royal flush, which has all five cards of the same suit. Other hands include a pair (two cards of the same number) and three of a kind (three matching cards). A poker hand can also contain a high card or a straight.
Getting good cards is important, but it is equally important to know how to play them. It’s a shame to waste your good hands by calling or raising too often. Instead, try to bluff with strong hands and get the other players to call or raise you.
Watch out for tells from other players, especially the time it takes them to make their decision. An immediate check or call is usually weak, but if they take a long time to decide then it is likely that they have a strong hand. If they are deciding whether to raise or not then they probably have the best hand at that point and will bet large to maximise their winnings.
