The Basics of Poker

Poker

Basically, Poker is a gambling game. The players bet in order to win a pot, which is the aggregate of all bets made by all players in a single deal. If one player has the best hand, that person wins. If no one has the best hand, the pot is split equally among the players.

Poker is usually played with a standard pack of 52 cards. The cards are ranked Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10, with two, three, four and five being the lowest. Some poker games add Jokers to the deck, which add to the variety of hands that can be created.

Players may bluff, betting that they have the best hand. If other players do not think that the player has the best hand, they may fold. If they call, the player may continue to play. If they fold, they may no longer compete for the pot.

The game is played with five to seven players. The goal of the game is to bet until all the other players fold.

The first bettor makes the first bet. The second bettor makes a bet that is equal to the first bettor’s bet, and so on. The player who bets first is said to have the highest ranking poker hand. If two players have the same ranking poker hand, the high card breaks ties.

The player to the dealer’s left bets the second blind, which is typically the same amount as the first blind. The dealer shuffles the cards and hands them to the opponent.
