The Basics of Poker

Poker is one of the most popular games in the world, with millions of people playing it on the internet and in real casinos. It has a rich history and is set to keep growing, adding more exciting things to the mix for years to come.

The Basics

A game of poker begins with a dealer, who deals out cards in front of all the players and takes bets from them. The game moves clockwise around the table, with each player taking turns betting or folding until the end of the round.

Hands

In standard poker, a hand is made of five cards. The best hands are a royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, and full house.

Ranks

The ranks of the cards in standard poker are determined by their odds (probability), and are not relative to suits. The lowest possible hand is 7-5-4-3-2 in two or more suits, and a pair of aces is the highest pair.

Rules

In most variants of poker, the first player to make a bet in any betting interval is called the “button” or “dealer.” Other players may make calls, raising the amount of money previously in the pot; and in some variants, players are allowed to check.

The player with the best hand at the end of the game wins the entire pot. If there are multiple hands tied for the top, they may be broken by the highest unmatched cards or a secondary pair.
